Bessie E. Boone Bond, 73, of 100 Lewis Ave., entered into eternal rest surrounded by her devoted children on Saturday, May 9 at her residence. Bessie was born to the late John Boone and Annie Power Boone on Feb. 10, 1936 in Suffolk (Nansemond County), Va.
She entered into holy matrimony to the late Joseph Clifton Bond Sr., and to this union, five children were born. One son, Joseph Clifton Bond Jr. and one granddaughter, Joy Bond, preceded her in death.
Bessie was employed by Jet Gas Services for more than 20 years before the company closed its doors. As an employee of Jet Gas Service, she was able to advance from a custodial worker to the company secretary and finally to the office manager. She was a corporate officer and shareholder of Claude.Evans.BondInc. and office manager of Bond’s Break Lube & Tune until her health began to fail.
At an early age, Bessie joined Pleasant Union Baptist Church. She was an active and devoted member until her health began to fail. She served diligently as the Minister of Pastors Aide Ministry; she also served as a member of Deborah Usher Board, Missionary Ministry, and Naomi Woman Fellowship Ministry.
As a native of Suffolk, Bessie was active in her community and served her community well. She served on the first planning committee of East Suffolk High School Class of 1953; and was the past secretary of East Suffolk High School Class of 1953. In addition, Bessie served as the past secretary of South Suffolk Civic League.
Bessie leaves behind to cherish her memory, three daughters, Belinda B. Evans (Donald), Gwendolyn L. Campbell (Pastor Kenny) and Joette C. Claude (Michael Sr.); a son, John L. Bond (Gwendolyn); a sister, Eleanor Clark; two brothers, Joseph H. Boone (Loretta) and Robert Boone (Barbara); a daughter-in-law, Angel Bond; 19 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Ms. Bond will be on view from 2-7 p.m., Friday, May 15 at the funeral home. The family will receive visitors on Lewis Avenue at all other times. A service of remembrance will take place at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 16 at Pleasant Union Baptist Church, the Rev. Dr. V.T. Chambers, eulogist. Ms. Bond will be laid to rest in the T.E. Cooke-Overton Garden at Carver Memorial Cemetery.
