State Senator Creigh Deeds took the Suffolk vote on his way to becoming the Democratic nominee for governor of Virginia. He will face off against Republican Bob McDonnell in the November election.

Though the sky was filled with rain and lightning toward the closing of the polls, Deeds brought in about 45 percent of the Suffolk vote, with Terry McAuliffe trailing at about 36 percent. Brian Moran got about 20 percent.

Statewide, the gaps in the percentages were even more evident. Deeds gathered about 49 percent of the vote statewide, while McAuliffe brought in 27 percent and Moran 24 percent.

In the race for the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor, Jody Wagner won by a landslide – 75 percent – statewide over Michael Signer, who garnered 21 percent of the vote. The third candidate on the ballot, Jon Bowerbank, withdrew from the race three weeks ago, but still managed to get 4.5 percent of the votes. Wagner’s margin of victory was even more pronounced in Suffolk, where he won with 82 percent of the vote.

Less than 5 percent of Suffolk’s registered voters showed up to vote in the primaries — a far cry from the 23 percent that voted in last year’s Democratic presidential primaries.
