It’s a week of fire trucks, giant hoses and obstacle courses.

It’s also a week of bike safety, first aid lessons and teambuilding.

This year’s Fire and Life Safety Camps, hosted by the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Department, still have spaces available for this summer.

“Kids describe it as an awesome camp — if you ask some of them, that’s the word they use,” said Pam King, an investigator with Suffolk Fire and Rescue. “It’s a full-energized camp.”

Throughout the week at camp, campers will ride on a fire truck, use real fire hoses, see a police drug-detection dog in action, run a 55-foot obstacle course with slide and get to have lunch with the firefighters.

But it is not all fun and games.

Campers also will have short lecture and lesson times, where they learn basic safety principles that include water safety, hands-on first aid training, natural disaster awareness and, of course, fire safety.

“We’ve just taken lessons from the classroom into the community,” King said. “We just used class lesson plans that children have heard in their schools and made it real.”

For instance, when students learn about bike safety, they will be measured for their own bike helmet that they can take home with them.

“There are injuries that occur with our kids that are preventable,” King said. “Each class that we have for them is filed with skills that they get to participate with during an activity. Then they will leave with something that enhances that lesson.”

This year, the camps will take place:

4Session 1 July 13-17 at Fire Station No. 5, located at 3901 Bridge Road

4Session 2 July 27-31 at Fire Station No. 3, located at 1001 White Marsh Road

4Session 3 Aug. 10-14 at Fire Station No. 5

4Session 4 Aug. 24-28 at Fire Station No. 3

The sessions will take place Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Campers can be dropped off at camp locations after 7:30 a.m. and must be picked up by 1:00 p.m.

The deadline for registering is June 24. One camp session costs $65 for each child. The cost includes lunch and a snack each day, materials to enhance the life safety messages learned during the camp, the graduation reception, and a camp T-shirt. The camps are open to children ages 7 to 10.
