HAMPTON — Langley Speedway celebrates Father’s Day and welcomes the official start of summer this Saturday when the track continues its 2009 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series campaign with Quaker Steak & Lube Night.

This weekend’s six-race lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service Late Model Stock Cars (100 laps); Old Point National Bank Grand Stocks (40 laps); Med Express Urgent Care Super Trucks (25 laps); EZ Auto of Newport News UCARs (25 laps); Standard Welding Pro 6s (30 laps); and, Wolf Trucks (20 laps).

Front gates open at 1 p.m. Afternoon practice rounds start at 2 and wrap up at 4. Qualifying gets under way at 4:30, following a 4:15 drivers meeting. Pre-race activities, highlighted by the naming of Langley’s “No. 1 Dad,” begin at 6:40, while the evening’s first feature race, the Wolf Truck 20-lapper, goes green shortly after 7.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military members in uniform are also admitted free. Military members in civvies (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price.

While most Late Model drivers enjoyed last Saturday night off, two of Langley’s top guns hit the road to chase valuable state and national NASCAR points.

Division leader C.E. Falk paid a visit to Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, the playground of defending national champ Philip Morris, and came away with a fifth-place finish. Meanwhile, Woody Howard competed in twin events at South Boston Speedway, finishing fourth and second.

In this week’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national Top 500, Falk slipped from fifth to sixth, just behind a trio of drivers from Nebraska’s I-80 Speedway. Also, Keith Rocco, who competes weekly at Connecticut’s three NASCAR-sanctioned tracks (Stafford, Thompson and Waterford), has supplanted Morris atop the national standings.

Other Langley regulars in the Top 500 include: Danny Edwards Jr. (117th), Howard (122nd), Mark Wertz (238th), Greg Edwards (246th), Wesley Falk (256th), Jeff Shiflett (365th), Shawn Balluzzo (366th), Dean Shiflett (452nd) and John Staton (485th).

In the Virginia state rankings, Morris still holds a commanding advantage over second-place Falk, despite a 19th-place stumble at Motor Mile last weekend.

Upcoming dates to remember:

4Thursday, July 2 — Modifieds and Grand Stocks head a six-race bill, highlighted by the track’s annual Independence Day fireworks extravaganza.

4Saturday, July 11 — Hampton Heat 200 — the season’s richest Late Model Stock Car race, plus four more feature events.

With a great deal of sadness, Langley Speedway notes the passing, early Wednesday morning, of track photographer Eric Brooks.

A longtime fixture at speedways and dragstrips around the area, Brooks coupled a keen eye for the action with unmatched photographic skills to capture a prodigious portfolio of memorable images.

Known for his boisterous, larger-than-life personality, Brooks will be sorely missed and the thoughts and prayers of the entire Langley Speedway fraternity go out to his family.
