A couple of former Saints and a Nansemond River alum are busy this summer with clubs in the Coastal Plain League.

The CPL’s first half of the season came to a close Monday night with the Forest City (N.C.) Owls having a record-setting start to the season. Forest City won the West Division in the first half with a 24-3 record, which is the most wins in half of a season in CPL history.

Bryan Breedlove (Nansemond-Suffolk, Lynchburg College) is a key starting pitcher for the Owls. Breedlove has a 4-0 record, a 1.99 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 31.2 innings. For the week of June 22-28, Breedlove earned Coastal Plain League Rawlings Co-Pitcher of the Week honors, mainly for a complete game (nine innings), four-hit shutout against Martinsville on June 23.

Matt Hamlet (Nansemond-Suffolk, Boston College) missed the first part of the season for the Gastonia (N.C.) Grizzlies since Boston College reached the NCAA playoffs. Since joining the Grizzlies, Hamlet is hitting .403 in 16 games with 13 RBI, a .473 on-base percentage and one error as in infielder.

Tyren Rivers (Nansemond River, Radford) is a little closer to home with the Peninsula Pilots. In 26 games with the Pilots, Rivers is 16 for 20 on stolen base chances and is errorless in 36 defensive chances in the outfield.

The Coastal Plain League is a wooden-bat, summer league for collegiate players with clubs in Virginia and the Carolinas.
