SMITHFIELD, Va. — Emily A. Peters, 60, passed away at home, July 1, 2009, surrounded by her loving family. Emily was born in Newport News and lived most of her life on the Peninsula. For the past 10 years, she was a resident of Smithfield. She was a Baptist by faith.
Emily attended Newport News Public Schools and was a graduate of Huntington High School. Emily graduated from Thomas Nelson Community College in 1975 with a nursing degree and received a degree in business management liberal arts in 1996. For 34 years, she was a dedicated registered nurse with Sentara Health Care and most recently was employed at Sentara Obici Hospital.
As a nurse, Emily dedicated her life to helping others. Over the course of her career, she served as a patient care supervisor, staff coordinator, nurse administrator, office nurse and staff unit nurse. Colleagues will remember Emily for her compassion and professionalism. She always put others before herself, often gave hugs, and was often “hard to find” because she was always in her patient’s rooms, caring for their individual needs.
Emily recently fulfilled a life-long dream by traveling to Beijing, China and Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia in October 2008 as a delegate of People to People Citizens Ambassador Programs.
Emily is predeceased by her father, James H. Peters, and survived by her mother, Helen Taylor Peters, her daughter, TeLisa T. Owens, and special friend, Stephen L. Banks; her son, Reginald Owens and his wife, Sherita; her granddaughter, Jessica; her siblings, Robert Taylor, Brenda Slight and her husband, George, Phyllis Peters, Russell Peters, and Rene Peters; and a host of nieces and nephews and extended family.
In lieu of a funeral service, the family requests memorial contributions to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are in the care of Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield.
