Lena M. Herndon, 74, of 820 Garfield Ave., Suffolk, Va., died Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at Sentara Obici Hospital. She was a native of Wakefield, Va., and the daughter of the late Richard Brock Sr. and Matilda Brock.
She retired from Planters Peanut Company. She was a member of St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church, where she was president of the Senior Choir, Deaconess, member of Body by Faith and the Stewardess Board. She was also a member of Local Union 26.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, James E. Herndon Sr.; four daughters, Linda Rodgers, Hazel Knight (Vernon), Gloria Herndon, Sandra Harris (Dennis), all of Suffolk; two sons, James E. Herndon Jr. (Mary), of Suffolk, and Alton Herndon (Sonya), of Oceanside, Calif.; 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Pearl V. Adams and Sallie Person (Arthur); a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Brock; a special niece, Regina Herndon and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, July 11, 2009 at St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church officiated by Pastor Wilmers Williams. Interment will be in Holly Grove Church Cemetery.
