PORTSMOUTH – Everything going wrong may be an exaggeration, certainly considering it came during a summer league basketball contest, but on Wednesday at Churchland High School that summed it all up for the Nansemond River girls basketball team in a 48-23 loss against Churchland.

With turnovers, missed layups and passive defense, the Lady Warriors couldn’t seem to get anything right. Although the main problem may have occurred before the game got underway.

The Lady Warriors were missing their starting backcourt combination of point guard Shay Humphries and wingman Jennell Cannon to initiate their offense, causing slow play and no organization amongst the team.

They found themselves down early as the Lady Truckers enforced their fast-paced play on NR from the start after a fastbreak layup gave them a 10-2 lead at the 13:00 mark.

Missed free throws on part of Churchland kept the Lady Warriors in the game early, but

Nansemond River was unable to stop penetration by the Lady Truckers despite playing a zone defense, as NR was called for numerous fouls.

Quanisha Leonard was the lone spark plug for the Lady Warriors off of the bench, pouring in 14 points. Leonard was the only double figure scorer for her team. She kept the game close with a contested layup in transition making the score 17-8 at the 4:50 mark.

Despite Leonard’s efforts, the NR still trailed 21-8 at the end of the half.

The Lady Warriors defensive struggles continued early in the second half. Churchland began with a 9-2 run to put more distance between themselves and the Lady Warriors.

At the halfway point of the second half the NR was down 23 points, as they continued to be hassled by the Lady Truckers fast-paced play.

Albeit with numerous flashes of a comeback in the last 10 minutes, the Lady Warriors couldn’t manage to put it all together, eventually falling 48-23.
