Former Nansemond-Suffolk Academy golfer Katie Murphy played a big role for the Virginias team as Virginia and West Virginia defeated North and South Carolina in the 53rd Annual Virginias-Carolinas Women’s Team Matches at Snowshoe, WV. The Virginias team completed a 25-point win, 66.5-41.5, on Wednesday at the Raven Golf Club.

Murphy, now a rising junior at William and Mary, won each of her four-ball matches on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday by a combined total of 7-2.

A pair of Virginia-West Virginia golfers played a pair of Carolina golfers with one point going to the winner of the front nine, one point to the winner of the back nine and one point for the overall match.

Murphy and Cindy Morris of Portsmouth partnered for 2-1 victories on Monday and Wednesday. Murphy and Richmond’s Lindsay Wortham their match, 3-0, on Tuesday. The overall score was close through the first round of matches, but the Virginias won Tuesday’s matches 23-13.

The Virginias were the defending champions and have won six of the last seven years in the series.

Each team was made up of 24 of the best female amateur golfers in the respective states.

Two weeks ago, Murphy won the consolation bracket in the Virginia State Golf Association Women’s Amateur Championship in Danville. Murphy lost in the round of 32 before winning four straight matches in the event.
