SUFFOLK — On Sunday, Aug. 7, 2009, the Lord called home one of his soldiers, Catherine Mazell Joe, affectionately called “Mother Joe.”
She was born in May 1921 in Nansemond County, now known as Suffolk. Her parents were Mary Jane Mazell-White (deceased) and Lloyd Smith (deceased).
She married Sammie Lee Joe (deceased).
Mother Joe was employed as a sewing machine operator.
She was a member and mother of Faith Temple Apostolic Church, Faith Temple missionary ministry president and prayer band leader.
She leaves to mourn her passing her son, Jawwand Bilal (Vernon Lee Joe), of Dillwyn; her sister, Annie Kindred, of Suffolk; brother, William Henry White, of Suffolk; a sister-in-law, the Rev. Madge White, of Portsmouth; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
A homegoing service will be held at noon Saturday at Faith Temple Ministries Apostolic Church. Interment will follow in Mazell Cemetery, Suffolk.
She will be taken to the church one hour prior to service.
A wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Wyatt & Sons Funeral Home Inc. Chapel.
