For the golf teams at Lakeland and King’s Fork, the story continues to be more about getting enough players on the team and out on the course than it does about anything else.

On Tuesday at Suffolk Golf Course, King’s Fork forfeited against Deep Creek as the Bulldogs had only three golfers. Four golfers are needed to record a team score in a high school match.

Lakeland won by forfeit over Oscar Smith. The Cavaliers improve to 2-1 on the season. Ryan Sigler, with a 99, and Stephen Blanchard, with a 105, had the best rounds for the Cavaliers. Oscar Smith had only three golfers.

Despite the forfeited team result, King’s Fork still had the individual highlight of the day at Suffolk Golf Course. Senior Andrew Cospelich made an eagle and was within a few feet of the rarest of all golf scores, an albatross two, on the par-five 18th hole.

With a four wood from 225 yards away in the fairway, Cospelich hit a shot that came to rest seven feet from the cup, directly behind the hole.

With a quick read over his putt, and a casual, confident stroke, Cospelich rolled in the putt for the eagle.

“It was a pretty shot. He hit it high, and it just came in nice and soft,” said King’s Fork head coach Calvin Mitchell.

Cospelich shot 77, with an even-par 36 on the back nine, to be the medalist in the KF/Deep Creek match. The Hornets had a team total of 383.

KF (0-3) meets city foe Nansemond River (1-2) on Wednesday afternoon, but at Portsmouth’s Bide-A-Wee Golf Course. Lakeland’s next match is Thursday vs. Western Branch at Bide-A-Wee.
