Saturday will be a big day for bargains, sales and cleaning out closets along Bridge Road.

It’s also going to be a big day for some of the leading ministries in three of North Suffolk’s biggest churches.

This Saturday, Faith Lutheran Church, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church and Ebenezer United Methodist Church are all holding yard and book sales. The three churches, which are less than three miles apart from one another on Bridge Road, had no idea the others were planning their events on the same day in the same timeframe.

“Well, we hope people come down and get a lot of shopping done, then,” said Judy Bander, organizer of St. Andrew’s yard sale.

Each sale is helping to fund individual needs or missions within the respective churches, and the sites will have items ranging from old newspapers to furniture.

Bander said this sale, in particular, will help raise funds to send the women in the church to a Presbyterian Conference Center in Harrisonburg.

“It’s good experience for the women to go off together, learn about leadership and service, and it’s also a very inspirational weekend,” Bander said. “This will supplement the cost for the women going, and it’s a fun way to get people to come to our church and meet us.”

Keith Atkins, a volunteer for the Faith Lutheran used book sale, said the church routinely has sales to help various missions.

“Whenever there comes a need, we will have a sale to benefit the different things in the church and outside the church,” said Atkins. In the past, the proceeds from Faith Lutheran’s sales have gone to aid mission work in Tanzania and to help rebuild the village of Driver following the 2008 tornado.

Ebenezer United Methodist Church is taking a different spin with their yard sale. The church offers a financial planning class, which helps families learn how to budget and save money. In an effort to encourage members to enroll in the class this fall, Roger Bryant and Nancy Quell helped set up a church yard sale in which families can sell whatever they like, but are asked to donate 10 percent back to the church.

“It’s a chance for people to move some stuff, to help the church and to work toward some financial peace,” Bryant said. “This was our way to encourage people before the class starts, and the church can make some funds and raise some money.”

Faith Lutheran’s sale is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Ebenezer’s is from at 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and St. Andrew’s sale is set to begin at 8 a.m. with no end time advertised.
