Calling all artists

Break out your canvases, watercolors and pottery wheels, because the village of Driver wants to see what you got.

Berea Christian Church will host its first Persimmon Orchard Artisan Show Oct. 24, which is during the village’s annual Driver Days festival.

For years, the church has been host to the Rio Grande Traders Car Show during Driver Days. But this year, organizers wanted to hold something a little different.

“There’s not a lot of art shows in Suffolk,” said Jennifer Traugott, organizer for the Artisan show. “And we’re tying to start that here.”

Traugott said local artists have very few venues to display their work, aside from Nansemond-Suffolk Academy’s annual art show and the Governor’s Pointe shows.

“We want these artists to have a place to show their work,” she said.

The church is renting out 10’x10’ spaces on the church grounds, at $50 for each space. Traugott said the artists are responsible for their own tents, displays, set-ups and chairs, and they must be present to display their own work.

Event organizers are asking that artists interested in displaying their work turn in an application by Sept. 5.

In the application, artists are asked to submit three 4”x6” color photos that feature detailed, single-work shots and include the participant’s first and last name. Traugott said the photos need to be of work completed within the last three years in order for it to be representative of the work intended for the show.

Additionally, the event staff reserves the right to reject any work on the day of the show, if it is deemed to be inappropriate for display on church grounds.

The car show still will be held at the church, on a different part of the property from the artisan show.

“We’re hoping to draw more people to Driver Days by adding an art show, bring in some different people who might not otherwise come through,” Traugott said. “We hope it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
