When it comes to living right, age is nothing but a number.

Residents of Lake Prince Woods plan to prove the point in two weeks as they participate in the national Active Aging Week.

“The purpose is just to say that anybody can be active physically, no matter what their age,” said Susan Stone, director of development and public relations for Lake Price Woods. “The more active you stay, the healthier you are, the better you feel, the better you sleep at night. There is something that almost anyone can do to stay active.”

Active Aging Week is a national initiative, with more than 1,000 locations across the country participating in ways to encourage people to stay active.

At Lake Prince, the residents and staff will be competing in a weeklong competition. Everyone will be issued pedometers at the beginning of the week, and paths will be drawn around the campus for people to take extra walks.

Additionally, on Sept. 21 each participant will help kick off the festivities by walking a specific number of steps based on the year they were born (i.e., someone born in 1940 would walk 1,940 steps).

“Our ‘Walk Your Age’ event is a great opportunity to reinforce the importance of movement and activity in maintaining a good quality of life,” Denise Brown, Director of Resident Services at Lake Prince Woods said in a company press release. “Regardless of a person’s age or condition, they should strive to incorporate movement into their daily routine.”

Residents who cannot walk will be able to earn extra points from other activities. For example, residents who are wheelchair bound will be able to earn points by wheeling themselves around the halls or by throwing a ball to someone while in their chair.

“Everybody, whatever their physical ability, will be able to earn points,” Stone said.

Lake Prince Woods is participating in the celebration this year thanks to the recommendation by Sherry Powell, the rehabilitation manager for Aegis Therapies, the company that provides rehab services for Lake Prince Woods.

“She came out and said, ‘Our company nationwide is getting involved with this, would you like to be a part of this?” Stone said. “And we thought, ‘Absolutely.’”

Anti-Aging Week begins is Sept. 21-Sept. 27. For more information on how you can get involved, call 757-923-5511.
