Lakeland got the lone victory among the Suffolk schools last week, coming from behind to beat Wilson 20-17.

The Cavalier defense held the Presidents to 74 yards while senior running back Cedric Johnson scored two of the three Lakeland touchdowns, including what turned out to be the game-winning score with eight minutes left.

The Warriors lost at Grassfield for the second straight season-opening game last Thursday, losing 33-6. Grassfield took advantage of a Warrior fumble and a botched punt attempt to gain a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Last October at Lakeland, the Cavaliers clinched a city sweep with a 47-12 victory over the Warriors. Lakeland scored 27 unanswered points in the second half to turn a close game into a blowout. Johnson rushed for 211 yards and Lakeland totaled 323 rushing yards in all.

King’s Fork (0-1, 0-0) at Hickory (1-0, 0-0) – 7 p.m.

This contest was scheduled to be played at King’s Fork until Wednesday when the location was switched. Results from inspections of the light poles at King’s Fork’s field are still to be determined, so as it stands now, King’s Fork will play only four home games this season.

Last week, while King’s Fork’s defense was outstanding against Churchland, a Division 5 playoff team a season ago, the Bulldog offense couldn’t find the one more score it needed as the Truckers won 10-8.

Hickory fell behind 12-0 in the first quarter against Norview, but rallied to win 15-12.

The Bulldogs and Hawks were both 3-6 in the Southeastern District last season. In last year’s meeting in late October, King’s Fork held Hickory to 20 total yards. In a game played in a downpour, King’s Fork relied on its running game as A.J. Harper ran for 144 yards.

Broadwater Academy (0-2) at Nansemond-Suffolk (0-1) – 7 p.m.

Last season – No meeting

The Vikings, from Exmore on the Eastern Shore, were 7-3 last season and have traditionally been a highly-ranked team in Division 3, the smallest schools, of VIS (Virginia Independent Schools). Broadwater’s already started this season though with a 20-2 loss at Atlantic Shores and a 30-8 loss at Southampton Academy.

The Saints struggled through a number of injuries and having to use three quarterbacks in their opening 28-0 loss at Windsor last Friday. NSA moved the ball well on a few occasions, but fumbles ruined the chances the Saints had to stay close with the Dukes.
