Nansemond River’s field hockey team scored two goals in each half to defeat city rival King’s Fork 4-0 and remain perfect through five matches this fall on Wednesday afternoon at King’s Fork.

With the rain practically all day on Tuesday, King’s Fork’s field hockey pitch was a slow, soggy surface even before the match started between the Lady Warriors and Lady Bulldogs. During Wednesday’s action, the field quickly became marked with large, muddy divots.

“You have to be more aggressive and the game is probably going to be more of an ugly game,” said Nansemond River head coach Darryl Yandle.

“You have to use flicks and raise the ball more, I was yelling that pretty much the whole game, and dribbling, that’s just about out of the question,” said Yandle.

Even with the rough conditions, the Lady Warriors did enough to post another easy victory. Four of NR’s five victories early on this season have been by four goals or more. The Lady Warriors have outscored their opponents 31-1 on the season.

Through the first three matches of the season for the Lady Bulldogs, KF (1-2-1, 1-2-0) had relied on its defense. King’s Fork had allowed one goal and scored one goal total prior to facing Nansemond River.

Loren Daubenspeck scored NR’s first goal about 10 minutes into the match. Shelby Holloman scored and the Lady Warriors were up 2-0 at halftime. Goals by Jessica Adams and Hannah Meinertzhagen put the match out of reach in the second half. Stephanie Tarafas only had to make one save to record the shutout in goal.

“In games like this, you’re never really happy with it because the game gets so ugly,” said Yandle. “The girls don’t step to the ball as hard as they need to and they tend to just watch what’s going on.”

King’s Fork must face its other Suffolk rival, Lakeland, next Wednesday at home at 5 p.m. Lakeland improved to 3-0 in the Southeastern District on Wednesday with a 9-0 win over Great Bridge in Chesapeake.

Nansemond River (5-0, 3-0) goes out of the district for its next match. The Lady Warriors play at Lafayette on Friday at 4 p.m. The next district match for NR is a big one; a home match on Wednesday against Western Branch. Western Branch defeated Nansemond River in the semifinals of the Southeastern District Tournament last season to end NR’s season.
