William and Mary’s women’s golf team set a new 54-hole program record over the weekend in winning the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa. William and Mary defeated a five-school field with a final team score of 893 (41-over par).

Junior Katie Murphy (Nansemond-Suffolk) placed 10th individually with a total of 232 (22-over par). Teammate Caroline Sweet was the tournament’s medalist with a total of 220 (10-over par).

The Bucknell Invitational was the first event of the fall golf season for William and Mary.

Christopher Newport’s men’s soccer team is currently ranked No. 5 in the nation in NCAA Division III. The Captains went 1-1 this past weekend at the Virginia Wesleyan Classic. CNU lost 2-1 to No. 1 Messiah and beat Baldwin-Wallace 3-1.

Sophomore defender Trevor Moyer (Nansemond River) played in both games as a sub. Moyer’s played in all five matches so far this season, making two starts, for the Captains.

CNU is 4-1 overall and hosts Marietta College on Friday night at 7 p.m. in Newport News.

Kent State tight end Jonathan Simpson (Nansemond River) caught his first touchdown of the season and the third of his collegiate career on Saturday for the Golden Flashes’ lone touchdown in a 34-7 loss at Boston College.

Simpson, a 6-foot-5, 237-pound junior, caught a 4-yard reception for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. He had two touchdown catches last season.

Kent State (1-1, 0-0 Mid-American) hosts Iowa St. next Saturday in Kent, Ohio.

Hampden-Sydney defeated Gettysburg 46-43 in overtime on Saturday at Hampden-Sydney. The Tiger and Bullet football teams totaled 1,213 yards of offense.

Hampden-Sydney tallied 34 first downs and, led by quarterback Corey Sedlar, HSC had 522 passing yards.

Senior wide receiver Adam Gillette (Nansemond-Suffolk) had four receptions for 87 yards for the Tigers.

HSC (2-0, 0-0 Old Dominion) travels to Tennessee to face Sewanee this Saturday.

Virginia Commonwealth’s field hockey team upset No. 17 Iowa 3-2 on Friday in the first round of the University of Iowa Tournament in Iowa City, Ia. Iowa was 18-4 and reached the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament last season. VCU was 5-14 last season.

Senior defender Ashley Aston started and made a defensive save in the Lady Rams’ win. On Saturday, VCU fell 3-0 to Stanford for VCU’s first loss of the season (4-1). It was the second time in program history VCU started a season 4-0.

VCU hosts Monmouth on Sunday afternoon in Richmond.

Averett’s women’s volleyball team won three of four matches this past weekend at the Emory and Henry Invitational, improving to 7-2 overall.

On Friday, Averett defeated Randolph and lost to Emory and Henry. On Saturday, the Lady Cougars beat Roanoke and Eastern Mennonite.

Junior Shannon Andy (Nansemond River) totaled 21 kills and eight total blocks for Averett in the tournament. Andy, a 5-foot-11 outside hitter, has played in 29 of 31 sets this season and is averaging 5.8 kills per match.
