If you didn’t get any cash for your clunker this year, there could be a better automotive bailout headed your way — the Suffolk Rotary Club car raffle.

Although club members have been selling tickets at community events all summer long, ticket sales are struggling this year, Suffolk Rotary member Bruce Bowles said.

“We’re way short of where we were this time last year,” he said, though he did not know the exact number of tickets sold.

The car, a white 2009 Chevrolet Aveo donated by Duke Automotive, has made the rounds of TGIF concerts, downtown events and other appearances this summer. Tickets are limited; only 2,500 will be sold, Bowles said.

The Suffolk Rotary Club has been doing big-ticket raffles for years, but has given away motorcycles in past years. This year, they decided to kick it up a notch, Bowles said.

“Just a little change-up,” he joked at Taste of Suffolk Saturday.

Not many tickets had been sold for the car by the end of the day Saturday. It is valued at more than $18,000.

The car gets up to 25 miles per gallon in the city, and 34 mpg on the highway.

All money raised from the raffle will go to a number of notable local charities, as in past years, Bowles said.

Tickets are $20 each, or five for $80. They can be purchased at Duke Automotive, Richardson & Nash Clothiers, D.B. Bowles Jewelers, Copico, Quality Cleaners, Suffolk Insurance or from any Suffolk Rotary Club member. The drawing will be held during Peanut Fest.
