A Suffolk woman died Wednesday in a head-on collision that tied up traffic on I-664 for hours during the morning rush hour.
Annie Goodman, 65, died at the scene of the accident after she ran head-on into a northbound PT Cruiser at about 6:21 a.m. near the Dock Landing Road exit, according to Sgt. Richard W. Walker of the Virginia State Police.
The driver of the PT Cruiser, 53-year-old Thompson Weeks of Portsmouth, was flown by Nightingale air ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he died in surgery at about 12:30 p.m., Walker said Thursday.
Goodman had been traveling southbound on the interstate when her Chevrolet Cavalier left the road on the left shoulder at a 45-degree angle and headed straight across the median and into oncoming traffic, striking Weeks’ vehicle in a left-headlight to left-headlight crash.
Walker said there was no sign that Goodman had attempted to avoid the crash.
“Her tracks were totally straight, with no evasive movement on her part, and no apparent braking,” he said. “From the condition of the impact and the placement of the two vehicles, they were probably traveling at about the same speed. This was a massive crash”
An autopsy will be completed to see if Goodman had suffered any medical issues that might have contributed to the wreck, he added, noting that she probably was killed instantly.
The highway was closed until 10:45 a.m. while police cleared the wreckage and a crash reconstruction team worked to determine what had happened, Walker said.
