The Nansemond River boys volleyball team improved to 7-1 overall and 6-1 in the Southeastern District by defeating Indian River, 25-16, 25-18, 13-25, 25-16 on Tuesday night at Nansemond River.

The Lady Warriors dropped to 4-4 overall and 3-4 in the district, losing in straight games, 25-17, 25-10, 25-19.

In the first match of the night, the Lady Warriors struggled against Indian River’s precise passing and devastating kills.

After dropping the first game, NR’s struggles continued into the second game. They started with three unforced errors to put themselves down early 4-1, forcing a timeout from head coach Cristine Pisani.

“It’s always going to be like that, you’re always going to have a night when you can’t hit,” said Pisani. “We let every little tip and dink fall on the court and we cannot have our defense play that poorly.”

The Lady Warriors’ woes carried over into the third game as they got down big early, 8-2.

Kills by Courtney Lowers and Danielle Gallagher kept the game close at 18-14, but the NR would ultimately drop the game 25-19.

Lowers saw a significant decrease in her numbers as she went down from 21 kills versus Lakeland to just five against Indian River. Gallagher led the team with seven kills.

The second match of the night would pan out different for the Warriors, as the boys team won in a highly-competitive match.

The two teams would trade points to start the first, but the Warriors jumped out to a 14-9 lead after a kill by hitter Cheynne Maupin, forcing a Braves timeout.

The Braves and the Warriors continued the back and forth after the timeout, but Kerrington Harris ended the game on a block, winning the first for the NR, 25-16.

The second game was much like the first, but service errors was the flaw in the Braves game that led to their defeat.

After another Braves serve flew out of bounds, NR went up 21-17. Harris would again end the game, with a kill this time, taking the second game 25-18.

Nansemond River head coach Brian Pisani would rest his starters to start the third game, and the reserves struggled to keep up with the Braves starters.

Indian River jumped out to a 9-0 lead, and it would prove to be a deficit the Warriors couldn’t overcome.

In the fourth game, the Warriors seemed to slow down from the pace they played in the first two games and they struggled with Indian River to start.

A kill by Maupin tied the game at 11, and from that point, NR seemed back on track to close out the match.

Consecutive kills by Kyle Breisemeister put the Warriors up 18-13, and Maupin ended the match on a powerful kill from the left side, winning 25-16.

Harris finished with a team-high nine kills for the Warriors. Josh Howard had 30 assists and Tyler Brown had 13 digs.

Both Warrior teams host Oscar Smith on Thursday evening.
