No Suffolk golfers qualified for the VHSL Group AAA State Golf Tournament on Tuesday during the final round of the Eastern Region Tournament at Sleepy Hole Golf Course. There was one very memorable moment for King’s Fork senior Andrew Cospelich however.

Cospelich sank the first hole-in-one in King’s Fork golf history, which spans six seasons, on Sleepy Hole’s No. 12.

From the blue tees, 170 yards according to Cospelich, he hit a 7-iron that landed about two feet to the left of the hole and slightly beyond the cup. The ball spun back into the hole for the aces.

King’s Fork’s coach, Calvin Mitchell, was one of the tournament organizers and was near the clubhouse and at the scorer’s tent for most of the tournament, so he didn’t see the shot live.

“Unfortunately, I was here, but one of the VSGA officials saw it and mentioned over the walkie-talkie,” said Mitchell.

The ace was the only one in the field of the two-day regional tournament.

“Not at first, I just thought it was going to be close,” said Cospelich about if he thought it had a chance when he struck the shot. A pond guards the front-right part of the 12th green. The pin was in the front part of the green, a narrow part of the green, and only about 15 feet from the water.

Cospelich gave the ball to Mitchell and Mitchell immediately put the ball away for safekeeping in the school van. Cospelich is way ahead of most golfers. This ace was his second hole-in-one, but first in a tournament.

It’s the second major piece of King’s Fork golf history Cospelich earned in his senior season. In August, Cospelich made the first eagle in Bulldog history with a three on Suffolk Golf Course’s par-five 18th hole.

Nansemond River sophomore Travis Johnson led the Suffolk portion of the leaderboard. Johnson shot 39 on both nines Tuesday and finished with a 162 (+18) total for the tournament. Johnson was eight shots behind the cut for an individual berth into the state tournament.

Cox won the team title with a total of 607 (+29). Kellam was second, 10 shots behind Cox, to take the last team spot to states. The six best golfers other than Cox or Kellam players go on to states.

Cox’s Moss Clark won regional medalist honors with back-to-back even-par rounds for a 144 total. First Colonial’s Andrew McCracken was second at 146.

Cospelich finished with an 81 on Tuesday and at 167 overall. Nansemond River senior Nicole Hemmis shot 88 on Tuesday and 183 for the tournament. Hemmis gets to continue her high school season into the VHSL Girls Golf Championships on Oct. 26-27 at Kempsville Greens in Virginia Beach.
