Christopher Newport’s men’s soccer team moved up to No. 2 in the nation in two NCAA Div. III polls after a 1-0 victory on the road at York (Pa.) College on Saturday. The No. 2 ranking equals the highest national ranking ever for any CNU sports program.

Sophomore defender Trevor Moyer (Nansemond River) came on as a substitute and had a shot on goal in the match at York. Moyer’s played in nine of CNU’s 10 matches this season.

The Captains (9-1) hosted North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday evening and will host Methodist on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Newport News.

Former Warriors, Saints on top D3 volleyball squads

Averett’s women’s volleyball team improved to 16-4 overall and 9-2 in the USA South Conference by winning two matches on Saturday in Raleigh, N.C. Averett beat Meredith in four sets and swept Mary Baldwin.

Junior Shannon Andy (Nansemond River) had 20 kills and four blocks in the two matches. Andy is averaging 6.5 kills per match for the Cougars.

Lynchburg took sole possession of first place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference by beating Randolph-Macon on Saturday in Lynchburg. The Hornets beat the Yellow Jackets, 25-20, 18-25, 20-25, 25-17, 15-13.

Lynchburg’s Michelle Boucher (Nansemond-Suffolk) had 11 kills and RMC’s April Hines (Nansemond River) had 13 kills and seven block assists. Boucher is averaging 7.8 kills per match. Hines is averaging 6.3 kills and 3.1 blocks per match.

Lynchburg improved to 12-5 overall and 5-0 in the ODAC. RMC is 16-2 overall and 5-1 in conference.

On the gridiron

Kent State went on the road against Big 12 opponent Baylor on Saturday and lost to the Bears 31-15.

Junior tight end Jonathan Simpson (Nansemond River) had three receptions for 32 yards for the Golden Flashes.

Kent State (2-3, 1-0 Mid-American Conference) faces in-state and conference rival Bowling Green on Saturday in Kent, Ohio.

Hampden-Sydney improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the ODAC with a 19-0 win against visiting Bridgewater on Saturday. HSC travels to face 4-0 Emory and Henry this coming Saturday.

Senior wide receiver Adam Gillette (Nansemond-Suffolk) has 13 receptions for 235 yards for HSC on the season. HSC has outscored opponents 202-79 in its five wins.

William and Mary junior Katie Murphy (Nansemond-Suffolk) finished tied for 26th individually as the Tribe golf team finished fifth out of 16 schools at the Nittany Lion Invitational Friday-Sunday in State College, Pa.

Murphy shot rounds of 76, 78 and 82 to finish 20-over par in the tournament and was W&M’s third-best golfer. William and Mary’s finished first, third and fifth in its three tournaments this fall.
