Lakeland (4-1, 3-1) at Indian River (0-5, 0-4) – 7 p.m.

Freshman running back Rackwon Johnson scored both of Lakeland’s touchdowns last week in the Cavs’ first-ever win against Western Branch.

Lakeland’s defense held the Bruins to 99 total yards and a number of Cavs were standouts. Donavan Wright had two interceptions, including one to end WB’s last possession of the game. Marco Peterson, Justin Howell and John Howard made repeated stops in the Bruin backfield.

Indian River dropped to 0-5 last Friday with a 24-6 loss to Grassfield. Two weeks ago, King’s Fork beat the Braves 35-14 and IR’s only offense was two long passes, more like short passes and long runs by receiver Kerry Spellman.

King’s Fork (1-4, 1-3) at Grassfield (3-2, 3-1) – 7 p.m.

Two weeks ago, Grassfield scared nationally-ranked Oscar Smith but came up short in a 7-3 game. Grassfield held the Tigers to their lowest point total since 2002, so that says enough for the Grizzly defense.

Grassfield should be 4-1, but lost 17-14 to Maury after fumbling on a kneel-down play and giving Maury the ball inside the Grizzly 10.

King’s Fork probably has to run the table in its last five games to have a shot at the postseason. Since making Matt Hommell the starting quarterback and Laray Kindred the starting tailback, the Bulldogs have a comfortable win over Indian River and hung with undefeated Great Bridge until the fourth quarter.

Nansemond River (0-5, 0-4) at Great Bridge (5-0, 4-0) – 7 p.m.

Last season – Great Bridge 49, Nansemond River 7

Nansemond River had close calls at getting its first win of the season against Wilson and Western Branch, but not so against Deep Creek in a 25-0 loss last Friday.

In Great Bridge’s 41-22 win over King’s Fork last week, quarterback Brad Hudson and receiver Marc Meier connected for six receptions, 164 yards and three touchdowns.

Nansemond-Suffolk (3-2) at Portsmouth Christian (5-1) – 7 p.m.

First meeting

Portsmouth Christian is in its third football season since starting a program and the Patriots have rapidly improved this season. Five wins is one more than the Patriots got in their first two seasons combined and the Patriots are No. 2 in the state (Virginia Independent Schools Div. II).

NSA enters No. 4 in VIS Div. II, right on the bubble as the last team to make the state playoffs.

Portsmouth Christian head coach Josh Blalock, who’s been with the Patriots all three years, spent part of his high school years at NSA and played quarterback/defensive end for the Saints in a state runner-up season in his junior year.

Will Crenshaw rushed for 256 yards and NSA totaled 383 rushing yards last Saturday in beating Virginia Episcopal 38-14.
