Just moments after the arrest of a 48-year-old woman for her alleged involvement with numerous bomb threats into Nansemond River High School was posted online, a comment that summed up our thoughts was posted.

“I am in total disbelief that these threats were made by an adult and I use that term loosely,” the poster KNRMCO wrote. We couldn’t have said it better.

It is with profound disbelief that an adult would have done such a thing, regardless of the situation or reason.

It has not been reported if the suspect had any connection to the high school, but the simple, juvenile act of doing such a thing is beyond comprehension.

It goes without saying that some of the children enjoyed the time out of their classrooms, postponing a test or throwing some “excitement” into the normal routine. But, the idiotic act of calling in such a threat puts our entire community at risk and puts our entire education system and the parents of these children on edge.

Just how many times will a threat be called in before school officials, students and emergency officials begin no longer treating them seriously? How many times will a threat be called in before someone just dismisses it as a prank and ignores the true risk?

Knowing our school officials and emergency officials, the answer is, thankfully, never.

These men and women tasked with educating our children, in the case of our school leaders, and potentially saving our lives, in the case of our emergency officials, go to work everyday to teach, educate and protect society.

In no way should they ever feel at risk by such a stupid act.

If convicted, the suspect should face the consequences of her actions and hopefully those consequences will prove a further deterrent to such ridiculous acts in the future.
