Who said anything about rain?

The annual Driver Days festival held this past weekend brought in thousands of visitors, shoppers and residents out to the North Suffolk village, despite weather reports that had called for rain Saturday.

“It went very well,” said Steven Wright, president of the Driver Retail Merchant Association. “We thought the weather was going to be bad on Saturday, and it turned out to be pretty good. We’re really happy with it.”

Wright said he did not have an exact number of people who came through the festival, but said it was more than 2,000.

Wright said he thought the new additions to the usual Driver Days schedule were well received.

For example, this year, organizers arranged to have live Civil War re-enactors on site to perform re-enactments throughout the day Saturday. Additionally, the festival had demonstrations from a Navy Dive Team. With a dive tank on site, members of the team performed various tasks and could interact with audience members from underwater.

Those events were in addition to the standard car and bike shows, which Wright said still brought in the most solid attendance of the weekend.

“People liked the re-enactments, they really liked that,” Wright said. “But most people come in here to see the bike show and the car show I think and everybody seemed to come for that.”

The total money raised from the weekend is still being calculated. But all the money earned from the event will help benefit the Driver Volunteer Fire Department, as well as the Suffolk Humane Society.

“Everybody looked like they were having fun,” Wright said. “We didn’t have any incidents. It was a good time.”
