The Wreath Society is seeking donations for its annual wreath-laying at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.

“Freedom isn’t free,” said Jeanne Banks, president of the Wreath Society. “It costs.”

The society began campaigning for money for wreaths back in September, but it is having trouble pulling in donations, Banks said.

The society seeks donations to buy roughly 2,000 wreaths of fresh greenery, tied with a red bow, to place at each gravesite at the Horton cemetery.

The project was inspired by the wreaths used to honor those buried at Arlington National Cemetery each year, Banks said. Banks once passed by the Horton cemetery, at 5310 Milners Road, during the holiday season and noticed the graves did not have wreaths, she said. The next month, she met with the cemetery’s director and was told wreaths were not in the cemetery’s budget.

“Like any resourceful person, I found some friends and family who were interested and willing to help,” Banks said. “I believe there are enough generous people who appreciate the sacrifice the military have made.”

The organization has no corporate sponsorship — just people who are willing to give their money to help purchase the wreaths and give their time to help lay them on the graves.

To donate money to help purchase wreaths, send contributions to SunTrust Bank, 123 Main St., Suffolk, VA 23434. Checks may be made out to “Wreath Society,” and envelopes should have “Wreath Society” on the front.

The wreaths will be placed at the cemetery on Dec. 12 beginning at 10 a.m. A special service will also be held at the cemetery, which is open to the public.
