With candidates for statewide office making hectic tours of the commonwealth, an important election deadline expires today.

Virginians who wish to cast absentee ballots have until 4:30 p.m. today to do so in person at their voter registrars’ offices. Suffolk’s voter registrar’s office is located at 425 W. Washington St.

Absentee ballots will be accepted by mail up until the polls close on Tuesday, according to Voter Registrar Sharon Thornhill, who said there has been a “medium” amount of interest in the election this year.

“It’s not like it was in ’08, but it’s busy,” she added. Nearly 75 percent of Suffolk’s registered voters showed up at the polls in November, despite chilly weather and rain.

Polls will be open Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., and anyone in line at 7 p.m. will be allowed to vote.

In Suffolk, all constitutional offices will be on the ballot, but only the job of the Sheriff is contested. Incumbent Raleigh Isaacs faces challenger Jay Clason in that race.

Each of Suffolk’s three state delegates also is up for re-election. None, however, face challenges for their seats.

In Isle of Wight, voters who live in the 64th House District will choose between Democratic incumbent William K. Barlow, Republican Stan D. Clark and Independent Green candidate Albert P. Burckard Jr.

Voters in the county’s Hardy and Carrsville election districts also are looking at competition for seats on the School Board, and Hardy District voters have a choice between the incumbent and a challenger for a seat on the Board of Supervisors.

At the statewide level, Virginians will choose between Democrat Creigh Deeds and Republican Robert. F. “Bob” McDonnell for governor; between Democrat Jody M. Wagner and Republican William T. “Bill” Bolling for lieutenant governor; and between Democrat Stephen D. Shannon and Republican Ken T. Cuccinelli for attorney general.
