The Nansemond River Warriors added one more bright spot to their football season by beating Indian River 9-0 on Friday night.

In the last home game of the season for the Warriors, they used a strong rushing attack led by sophomore Lamont Brown and sophomore Benjamin Dubois to pave their way to victory. Brown led the team with 179 rushing yards on 23 carries for the Warriors.

After stalling out on their first drive, defensive back Shannon Evans tipped an errant Indian River pass to himself for an interception and returned the ball to the IR 13.

After three rushes for only four yards, the Warriors opted to kick a 26-yard field goal. Kicker Logan Woolston booted the ball through the uprights to give his team a 3-0 lead with 4:32 remaining in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Brown converted on fourth down with a 23-yard rush down to the Indian River 9.

Brown’s play set up a 12-yard touchdown reception by Bernard Jennings in the back of the end zone with 10:25 remaining, making the score 9-0 in favor of the Warriors.

Nansemond River ran an almost flawless hurry-up offense at the end of the first half, making it to the IR 31 on just three plays. This drive would stall out though, with a low snap ending the half.

The Warriors’ next scoring opportunity would come with 5:49 remaining in the third quarter. With three unsuccessful rushing attempts, NR would again attempt a field goal, though this time, Woolston’s kick hit the side of the goal post and was no good.

The Warriors would get a scare in the fourth quarter. After Indian River converted a 3rd-and-25, they would march to their own 48 yard line. A sack by Lynn Peele on 3rd-and-10 would end the drive for the Braves though, ultimately sealing Nansemond River’s second win of the season.

Nansemond River (2-7, 2-6) finishes the season on the road against rival King’s Fork next Friday.
