In a landslide vote, Suffolk residents re-elected Raleigh Isaacs Sr. to the sheriff’s post, giving him another four-year term to add onto the 16 years he already has served in the office.

Isaacs soundly defeated opponent Jay A. Clason. Isaacs garnered roughly 70 percent of the vote, gaining 12,596 votes to Clason’s 5,281.

“The citizens have spoken clearly as to what they expect in their sheriff’s office, and what they expect from their sheriff,” Isaacs said in a phone interview after the results were in. “We want to express our sincere appreciation to those who voted for us.”

Isaacs celebrated his win at downtown events venue The First Lady, surrounded by about 75 friends. Isaacs beat his opponent in each of the city’s 22 precincts, with the closest margin being exactly 100 in the Cypress Chapel precinct.

“It just shows that even though we’ve been here for a long time and felt we were qualified, obviously the citizens felt that too,” Isaacs said.

Clason thanked the people who had worked on his campaign.

“I’m very thankful for a lot of people who gave a lot of hard work and time and effort and money to support me,” Clason said. “It was an interesting race. I enjoyed it. I got to learn a lot about Suffolk and meet some great people.”

Clason also congratulated Isaacs on his win.

“Congratulations to him for a fifth term,” Clason said.
