Suffolk residents Pam Courtney and Brad Halcums received several awards during the Virginia Living Museum’s Volunteer Recognition ceremony in October.

Halcums received the Dust Bunny Award for organizing the preparations area for non-live collections, and Courtney received the Gold Bond Award for creative uses of glue to mend collections items.

Both were also recognized for reaching a service milestone of 1,000 hours during the past year and Courtney was recognized for 10 years of service as a volunteer.

Christina Panagopulos of Suffolk received two awards: an award from the education department for her creativity and fun attitude in helping with children’s classes and an Eager Beaver Award for being a new volunteer who has shown a lot of dedication.

Barbara Boyer of Williamsburg received the Scan Queen Award for scanning and inputting data from the Virginia Living Museum’s collections records. She also was recognized for reaching a service milestone of 2,000 hours.

The museum in Newport News has 424 active volunteers. In 2008-09, volunteers contributed 40,567 hours of service, the equivalent of 17.5 full-time positions. About 65 percent of the volunteers interpret exhibits for the public, about 30 percent work in curatorial areas and the remaining 5 percent are in administrative capacities.
