On campus: ECU’s Freeney, G’town’s Rodgers have huge days

East Carolina wide receiver Darryl Freeney (Nansemond River) had a career-high 152 yards receiving on Sunday night in ECU’s 44-17 win at Tulsa.

Freeney caught a Patrick Pinkney pass for a 37-yard touchdown to give the Pirates a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter. Freeney went on to have eight receptions. Freeney has 23 catches for 374 yards and two touchdowns on the season.

ECU (6-4, 5-1 Conference USA) hosts Alabama-Birmingham on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Hampden-Sydney won the 115th edition of “The Game” on Saturday after, going to Ashland and beating Randolph-Macon 34-27. “The Game” is the longest small school rivalry in the South.

The Tigers finish the regular season 10-0 and as Old Dominion Athletic Conference champions. HSC’s 1971 team is the only other Tiger squad to go 10-0.

Senior Adam Gillette (Nansemond-Suffolk) caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Corey Sedlar to get HSC on the board and tie the score, 7-7.

RMC took a 27-26 lead with a touchdown with 13:02 left in the fourth period. HSC scored on a 90-yard kickoff return on the ensuing kickoff to retake the lead, 34-27.

Gillette has 32 receptions for 530 yards on the season. HSC hosts Johns Hopkins (8-2) in the first round of the NCAA Div. III Tournament on Saturday at 12 p.m.

Freshman TaShauna “Sugar” Rodgers (King’s Fork) scored a team-high 21 points in her debut with Georgetown as the Lady Hoyas won 79-55 at Missouri St. on Saturday.

Rodgers, a 5-foot-11 guard, added five rebounds and two assists to her 21 points. Rodgers was 2-for-4 from three-point range and 5-for-5 at the foul line.

Georgetown (1-0) plays at James Madison on Wednesday evening.

Winthrop edged Limestone 57-55 to open its men’s basketball season on Saturday in Rock Hill, S.C. Sophomore Andre Jones (Nansemond River) led the Eagles with 15 points, three steals and two assists. Jones was 9-for-10 at the foul line.

Winthrop plays at Charleston on Tuesday evening.

Freshman Andrea Jones (Nansemond River) came on as a substitute in her debut for Mount Olive and scored 10 points, but Mount Olive lost to visiting Elizabeth City State 72-67 on Saturday.

Jones also added three steals and was 2-for-2 from three-point range.

Apprentice School’s men’s basketball team opened its season with three games in three days in New Hampshire and Maine and came home with a 3-0 record.

The Builders opened on Friday with an 86-79 win at New Hampshire Tech. Freshman Chris Hearn (King’s Fork) had 19 points on 8-for-10 field-goal shooting for the Builders.

On Sunday, Apprentice finished the road trip with a 53-50 win at Central Maine. Senior Eric Joe (Nansemond River) had 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Christopher Newport’s men’s soccer team moved through the first two rounds of the NCAA Div. III Tournament this weekend in Newport News. The Captains beat Cabrini 4-0 on Saturday. CNU beat Lynchburg on penalty kicks, 4-3 in the penalty-kick round and 1-1 through regulation and overtime, on Sunday.

In Sunday’s match, CNU scored 44 seconds into the match and led all the way until Lynchburg scored with 2:11 left in regulation.

Sophomore defender Trevor Moyer (Nansemond River) started in both matches for CNU.

CNU (18-2-2) advances to the final 16 of the NCAA Tournament and has yet to learn its next opponent.

CNU’s field hockey team was ousted in the round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, losing 4-2 to Cortland in Salisbury, Md. Cortland improved to 19-0. CNU’s season ends with a 16-4 record.

Junior Katelyn Yandle (Nansemond River) assisted on Taylor Harrell’s goal that gave CNU a 2-1 lead three minutes into the second half. Yandle finishes the season with six goals and a team-high eight assists.
