A local man is charged with several felonies after he allegedly botched a convenience store robbery on Thanksgiving Day.

Suffolk spokeswoman Debbie George said Brandon Norman, 21, entered the QuickMart in the 1100 block of Portsmouth Boulevard about 10 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning. He asked where the restroom was, and was directed to it by the clerk, George said.

After going into the bathroom, the man emerged with a gun drawn and his jacket pulled over his face, George said, telling the victim to “give him all the cash.”

“The clerk replied, ‘Are you serious? I just saw your face,’” George said.

The suspect pulled his jacket down, saw the security camera to which the clerk was pointing, and then left the building, George said.

The victim called police and gave a description of the man’s vehicle. The man had cashed checks in the store several times, George said, and the store therefore had his name and address on file.

Police dispatchers told officers to be on the lookout for the man’s vehicle, and he was stopped a short time later. The suspect allegedly had 20 bags of marijuana in the vehicle, George said.

Norman is being held in Western Tidewater Regional Jail. He is charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, attempted robbery, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and traffic offenses.
