Margaret Umphlett

Margaret Mann Umphlett, age 82, of Suffolk, passed away on Dec. 1, 2009. A native of Nansemond County, Va., she was the daughter of the late G.C. Mann and Maggie Abernathy Mann. She was also predeceased by her husband, Clyde Jefferson Umphlett, her sister, Becky, and two brothers, Charles and Bill. She was an educator and counselor in Chapel Hill, N.C. and Clemson, S.C., and later a counselor at an abused women’s center. As a child of educators and being an educator herself, she had an ongoing quest for knowledge.
She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Jeff, of Elberton, Ga., and Rebel and Myrna, of Durham, N.C.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Betty M. Bunch, of Suffolk and brother, Philip R. Mann, of Burlington, N.C.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Cypress Chapel Christian Church, with the Rev. Willis I. Dowling officiating. Friends may join the family for visitation at the church after the funeral service.
