Former NSA swimmer shaving seconds

Washington and Lee junior Brandon Wilder (Nansemond-Suffolk) won the 200-meter butterfly in a quad-team swimming meet on Nov. 7 against Catawba, Rollins and Wingate. Wilder clocked in at 2:00.21.

On Saturday in a meet at Virginia, Wilder finished 12th in the 200 fly with a time of 1:57.56. Other teams at the UVa. meet included the Cavaliers, Kansas, West Chester and American. Washington and Lee is 5-3 so far this season.

Virginia Wesleyan senior Jason Taylor (Nansemond River) nearly broke VWC’s school record in the 800 meter run on Saturday as the Marlins started their indoor track season at a meet at Chowan. Taylor’s time of 2:00.28 placed him sixth in the meet and was just over a second more than the school mark ot 1:59.23.

Winthrop’s men’s basketball team got its first conference win on Saturday, beating visiting High Point 82-68.

Sophomore Andre Jones (Nansemond River) had 13 points, with 5-of-6 shooting from the field, three rebounds and three assists for Winthrop (3-4, 1-1 Big South). Jones is leading the Eagles in scoring with 10.6 points per game.
