Lenette’s Floral Design would be expected to have nice-looking flower arrangements, but the window display at the Suffolk business recently took top honors in a window decorating contest.

The flower shop at 174 E. Washington St. edged out Embroidery Etc. and Richardson & Nash Clothiers, who took second and third places in the contest, sponsored by the Suffolk Division of Tourism. Blanchards Tire & Auto and Uniquely Leo’s also participated in the contest, created for downtown merchants to showcase their creativity and community spirit, according to a city press release.

A secret panel of judges graded each participating storefront on traditional holiday spirit, illumination, creativity, concept, interpretation of parade theme (“Sounds of the Holidays”) and overall display. Winners receive a custom plaque and year-long bragging rights.

Several Suffolk businesses also are participating in the Retail Alliance Holiday Window Works contest, with 85 stores throughout Hampton Roads and the Smith Mountain Lake area competing for top honors and a chance to win up to $1,500.

“This is quickly becoming a wonderful holiday tradition,” said Retail Alliance president and CEO Susan L. Milhoan. “Visiting the windows is a great way to get into the spirit and makes a nice family outing.”

The contest’s 2009 theme, “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow,” features two different categories — the Window Works Award, selected by a panel of judges, and the People’s Choice Award, given to the participating business that raises the most money from customers who vote on their window display by donating cash and spare change. All proceeds from the ballot boxes in Hampton Roads will be given to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters.

Suffolk businesses include A. Dodson’s, Katody’s, Smithfield Gardens, Bon Vivant Market, The Ugly Mug and A Tisket, A Tasket. People can vote in an online people’s choice contest through Sunday, or vote in person by visiting each business and dropping change in the contribution box.

Last year’s voters raised more than $7,000 for the children’s hospital.
