Jennings hits game-winner for Chowan

Chowan’s women’s basketball team defeated CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) foe Virginia Union 52-50 last Wednesday in Richmond.

Sophomore guard Ransheeda Jennings (King’s Fork) made a free throw with 0:37 left to make it 50-50. Jennings proceeded to get a steal and make a lay-up with 0:12 to give Chowan a 52-50 lead. Jennings is Chowan’s leading scorer averaging 12.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game, but she had scored only two points until the last 0:37 of the game.

Chowan (3-5, 2-3) plays at Virginia State tonight at 5:30 p.m.

Georgetown’s women’s basketball team won at the University of Richmond on Saturday, 78-63. The Lady Hoyas improved to 9-2 overall.

Freshman TaShauna Rodgers (King’s Fork) had 18 points, including 3-of-6 three-point shooting for Georgetown. Rodgers added three rebounds and two assists.

Georgetown’s next game is set for Sunday in Washington, D.C. vs. Jacksonville St.

Old Dominion’s men’s swim team defeated George Washington 108-89 on Dec. 5 in Washington, D.C. The Monarchs won the 200-meter medley relay in 1:38.36. Sophomore Phillip Brooks (Nansemond-Suffolk) was the breaststroke leg of the relay team with Kristian Ramkvist, Kevin Latimer and Johan Lundberg.

On Nov. 8 in Norfolk, ODU defeated conference rival William and Mary 194-156. Brooks placed second in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:11.28. ODU is 3-1 in dual meets in 2009-10.

Terika Lunsford, a 2009 Lakeland graduate, is transferring from Albany to Liberty starting next semester. Lunsford went to Albany with a basketball scholarship. Lunsford is the all-time leading scorer in Lady Cavalier history.
