1 Warrior, 1 Cavalier lead Chowan

Senior Jaleel Nelson (Lakeland) and junior Mark Brown (Nansemond River) each totaled double-doubles for Chowan on Wednesday in a 76-67 victory at CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) foe Virginia State.

Nelson, a 6-foot-5 guard, had 18 points and 12 rebounds. Brown, a 6-foot-4 guard, had 15 points and 10 boards. Both Nelson and Brown have led Chowan (4-3, 3-2) in scoring in two games this season. Nelson’s averaging 16.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Brown’s averaging 12.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game while shooting 38 percent from three-point range.

Marquie Cooke (Nansemond River) is leading Elizabeth City State’s basketball squad in points and assists per game through eight games this season.

Cooke, a 2003 Nansemond River graduate, was a point guard for Virginia Tech for two years before being dismissed from the team by head coach Seth Greenberg. Cooke transferred to Colorado State but never played a game for the Rams.

As a sophomore at ECSU, Cooke’s led the Vikings (4-4) in scoring in three games this season. Cooke had back-to-back 24-point games earlier this month in losses to Shaw and St. Augustine’s.

On Wednesday, Cooke had five points, 10 assists and six rebounds in a 72-66 Viking win at Barton.

Cooke’s averaging 14.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game.

Hampton’s Predist Walker (Lakeland) won his third individual event out of two track meets so far during the indoor season. Walker won the long jump at the Golden Flash Gala in Kent, Ohio last Friday. Walker’s top mark was 7.25 meters (23-feet-9.5). Walker also placed second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.06 sec.) in the meet.

Averett’s men’s basketball team defeated Hampden-Sydney 70-55 on Wednesday in Danville thanks largely to Nansemond River alums Ruben Pierce and Kenny Hart.

Pierce had 13 points and two assists and Hart had 11 points and three steals. Pierce and Hart are sophomores. Hart averages 12.8 points per game and Pierce is averaging 7.4 points per game for the Cougars (2-6).
