One man remained in the hospital in stable condition on Monday after being shot at a party early Sunday morning.

Michael Anthony Smith, 26, was outside the residence in the 400 block of Linden Avenue when he was struck by a bullet at about 12:41 a.m. Sunday, he told police.

Smith had walked outside the home, where a large party was taking place inside, according to Suffolk spokeswoman Debbie George. Outside, he told police, there were several people, and there was a fight in progress. Smith heard gunshots, got hit in the chest by a bullet and then ran to his home on Ashley Avenue, he reported.

Someone at the scene called an emergency dispatcher, and Smith was picked up and transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where his injuries were determined not to be life-threatening, George said.

Another person at the party reported having been “struck in the head by someone or something,” George said. That person’s injuries, however, were not significant enough to require transport to the hospital.

A witness, according to George, reported that shots had been fired into the air during the outdoor confrontation.
