Suffolk Mixed Martial Arts will be starting a Brazilian jiu jitsu program on Jan. 25, 2010 and Suffolk MMA is proud to add 2009 jiu jitsu world champion Adrienne Adams to its staff to head up the new course.

The first Brazilian jiu jitsu class will be a free class for anyone thinking about trying it out. Jiu jitsu is great as a sport or for self-defense. Military and law enforcement personnel have been using jiu jitsu training more often to protect themselves in combat.

The initial, free class is set for Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. Suffolk MMA invites anyone, regardless of age, gender or skill level to come out.

Adams won the gold medal in Brazilian jiu jitsu at the 2009 Mundials World Championships. In over 30 regional, national and international tournaments, she’s medaled in all but two tournaments.

Despite her tremendous resume in the sport, Adams started taking a Brazilian jiu jitsu course only after being tricked by a friend to come into a gym for what Adams was told was only the opportunity to have her picture taken with an MMA fighter she was a fan of.

Besides competing at the highest level, Adams instructs classes, officiates jiu jitsu tournaments, judges MMA events and has started her own equipment line.
