Arkansas defeated East Carolina 20-17 in overtime in the 51st Liberty Bowl Saturday night in Memphis, Tenn.

The Pirates (9-5) finish the season as the back-to-back Conference USA champions, but with their second straight loss in the Liberty Bowl.

Darryl Freeney (Nansemond River) led the Pirate receivers with six catches for 94 yards.

The Pirates led 10-0 at halftime and didn’t trail at any point in regulation. ECU kicker Ben Hartman missed four of five field goal attempts, including a 39-yard try with 1:03 left in regulation that would’ve given ECU the lead, and a 35-yard try in the first half of the first overtime period.

The Razorbacks (8-5) and Pirates played in front of 62,742 fans in Memphis.

Freeney, a redshirted sophomore, finishes the season second on the ECU team in the main receiving statistics with 48 receptions, 718 yards (15.0 yards per catch) and three touchdowns.

Georgetown’s TaShauna “Sugar” Rodgers (King’s Fork) made a floating jump shot in the lane with 0:20 left in overtime to give the Lady Hoyas an 83-81 lead, and 0:20 later, an 83-81 win at Syracuse on Saturday.

The win is the 11th straight for Georgetown (12-2, 1-0). Syracuse was ranked No. 23 in the nation in the coaches poll.

Rodgers, a true freshman, had 20 points, including 6-for-6 shooting from the foul line, along with four rebounds and three steals for the Lady Hoyas.

Chowan’s basketball teams swept a pair of CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) games against visiting St. Paul’s Saturday.

Chowan won the women’s game 65-60 with sophomore guard Ransheda Jennings (King’s Fork) pouring in a team-high 25 points. The Lady Hawks are 5-6 overall and 3-4 in the CIAA.

In the men’s game, Chowan (5-4, 4-2) won 72-70. Senior Jaleel Nelson (Lakeland) had 18 points and nine rebounds for the Hawks. Junior Mark Brown (Nansemond River) scored 17 points, including a pair of free throws to give Chowan a 70-68 lead with under a minute to go.
