The Nansemond River Pilot Club brings back one of the zaniest local fundraisers for the American Cancer Society next week, with the 10th anniversary of the Womanless Beauty Pageant.

The women are in short supply and “beauty” is clearly in the eye of the beholder, but the pageant is always a popular local event and a big-time fundraiser for the ACS Relay for Life.

Last year’s event raised about $15,000, according to Pilot Club member Jeanne Banks. For participants and organizers, raising money is, of course, the most important part. But there’s also something to be said for walking away with the glittery sash that proclaims a contestant to be “Ms. Relay for Life.”

Past winners have included Delegate Chris Jones, Gary Williams, Bruce Bowles, Joe Alvarez, Kenny Campbell, Jerry Butler and Scott Nash.

Many of those winners are expected to gather Jan. 16 to strut their stuff on the catwalk once again, as this year’s theme is “Battle of the Queens,” and the Pilot Club intends to crown one of its former beauties as the best of the best.

Once again, contestants will participate in an evening gown competition, a talent competition and a brief question-and-answer session.

The audience will be treated to entertainment by the contestants, along with a return of the locally popular “Sister Act,” which has graced the stage of other Relay events in the past.

The Olive Garden Restaurant in Chesapeake will again be donating the food for the event, and Dave Parker from US106.1 will return as the master of ceremonies.

Tickets to the event are $20 and are still available by calling 539-9988. About 300 people are expected to attend, and tickets will not be available at the door.
