The American Cancer Society has launched a nationwide series of events entitled DetermiNation to highlight the resolve of those who fight cancer, as well as those who participate in events designed to raise money to help break the disease’s hold on the nation.

“By engaging family, friends and anyone wanting to help them make every mile more meaningful, these athletes are helping create a world with less cancer and more birthdays,” according to Domenick Casuccio of the American Cancer Society.

“DetermiNation team members and those who stand with them enable the American Cancer Society to save lives everyday by helping people stay well, helping them get well, by finding cures and by fighting back against the disease.”

Athletes will be helping the American Cancer Society this year by participating in marathons, half-marathons, triathlons, cycling races and an array of other events. Many of them have personal stories to help explain their commitment.

Kelsey Turner will run this year in memory of her mother, Marilyn Turner, who died of uterine cancer at the age of 48 on Jan. 7.

“She was a strong woman who found great pleasure in running and working out,” according to Kelsey. “Before her passing, she motivated me to sign up for my very first half-marathon and promised me she would be there with signs cheering for me as I passed the finish line. I know she won’t be there physically, but spiritually, she will be there with me the whole way.”

Upcoming area events in which DetermiNation runners will participate include the Shamrock Half-Marathon, the TowneBank 8K, the Shamrock Marathon and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon.
