Former Cavalier earns two Player of Week awards

Chowan senior Jaleel Nelson (Lakeland) reached a career milestone and won a pair of national awards within the last two weeks during a four-game winning streak for the Hawk basketball squad.

Nelson surpassed 1,000 career points earlier this month. On Jan. 4, Nelson scored 31 points in a win against Elizabeth City State. On Saturday, in a 74-73 win at Bowie St., Nelson totaled 16 points, six rebounds and four blocks. On Monday, in a 77-73 win at Lincoln (Pa.), Nelson had 23 points, nine rebounds, three steals and three assists.

All of Nelson’s performances added up to him being voted the HSRN (Heritage Sports Radio Network) National NCAA Div. II Player of the Week and the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) Player of the Week.

Junior Mark Brown (Nansemond River) is leading Chowan as well. Brown had 24 points and seven rebounds in the Bowie State game. Chowan’s Charles Rhodes made a three-pointer with 0:12 remaining in the game to give CU the one-point victory. Brown also put up 23 points in the Lincoln game.

Chowan is 8-4 overall heading into games Friday and Saturday in the North Carolina Central University/BC Powder Classic in Durham, N.C.

Georgetown’s women’s basketball team rolled to two more victories in the last week giving the Lady Hoyas (14-2) 13 straight wins and a 3-0 record in the Big East.

Freshman TaShauna Rodgers (King’s Fork) had 18 points on 6-for-13 three-point shooting in Georgetown’s 66-52 win at South Florida on Saturday. Rodgers added six rebounds, four assists and four steals.

On Tuesday in Washington, D.C., the Lady Hoyas defeated Providence 74-62. Rodgers scored a game-high 26 points and added three assists.

Georgetown is ranked No. 24 in the Associated Press Poll and No. 18 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll; both rankings are all-time highs for the program.

Georgetown hosts conference foe Louisville Saturday at 2 p.m.

Winthrop picked up two Big South conference wins last week at home, beating VMI 96-63 and Liberty 65-62.

Sophomore Andre Jones (Nansemond River) had nine points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists in 23 minutes against the Keydets. Jones had six points and three boards in 20 minutes against the Flames.

Winthrop (7-9, 3-3) has three straight road games upcoming, starting Saturday evening at Presbyterian.

Hampton junior Predist Walker (Lakeland) and Norfolk State sophomore Darryl Brickhouse (Nansemond River) had top finishes in the Father Diamond indoor track meet at George Mason Saturday.

Walker placed second in the long jump (7.06 meters, 23-feet-2) and fourth in the triple jump (14.43 meters, 47-feet-4). Brickhouse was fifth in the 400 meters (51.27).
