Nansemond River swept three Southeastern District wrestling rivals for a historic night for the Warrior program on Wednesday at Great Bridge High School.

The Warriors defeated 18-time state champion Great Bridge for the first time in NR wrestling history, beating the Wildcats 39-31. Nansemond River defeated Grassfield, the defending champion in the district, 42-33; and the Warriors defeated city rival King’s Fork 67-3.

“The wins are coming from the team committing to wrestling this season and working hard in the practice room,” said Nansemond River head coach Tripp Seed.

“I have a great group of kids this year who work hard and feed of each other’s energy,” Seed said. Seed thought NR’s win over Great Bridge is a first for any Suffolk school. Great Bridge’s 18 state titles have all come since 1987.

Nansemond River is 16-5 overall in dual matches this season and Wednesday’s 3-0 night made the Warriors 4-1 in the district. The Warriors won the team title in December at the Presidents Cup Tournament at Wilson. The Warriors also went 2-2 at the Virginia Duals in Hampton earlier this month.
