Bessie A. White, of 2000 Hickorywood Drive, Suffolk, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010 at Sentara Obici Hospital. She was a native of Southampton County and the daughter of the late Vernon Lee and Ida Jackson Artis. She was also predeceased by one son, Kenny White.
Mrs. White was the owner/operator of White Grocery. She was a member of O’Berry A.M.E. Zion Church in Franklin, Va., where she was on the Usher Board and Missionary Circle. She was a former General Claims Treasurer.
She leaves to cherish fond memories her husband, Linwood L. White Sr.; four daughters, Ellen J. Williams, of Norfolk, Va., Joyce Shands (Jackie), and Ellen M. White, both of Suffolk, Carolyn Matthews (Gerald), of Erwin, N.C.; five sons, Linwood L. White Jr., of Franklin, Charles White (Geraldine), of Norfolk, Phillip White, of Suffolk, Glennis White, of Portsmouth, Curtis White, of Suffolk; 33 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Turner, of Portsmouth and Blanche Files (Alvin), of Newport News, Va.; a devoted daughter-in-law, Sherlene White, of Chesapeake, Va.; devoted family friends, Mary Washington and Felicia Brown; devoted friends, Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Godwin; a host of nieces, nephews and many friends.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010 at O’Berry A.M.E. Zion Church in Franklin officiated by the Rev. Dale Seaborne. Entombment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery.
