“We get into one speed, and we just can’t slow down,” said Kings Fork’s head coach Maurice Fofana, “If we can play that way the rest of the season, then we’re sure to shake up a couple teams.

If the Lady Bulldogs do not shake up any other team, they’ve left Nansemond River in a daze. Kings Fork defeated the Lady Warriors 66-46 in a game that was a lot more lopsided than the scoreboard showed.

After scoring just seven points in the first quarter, the Lady Warriors kept the game close, and trailed by just nine, 22-13, with 2:42 left in the second quarter. But King’s Fork would make a run that would leave an imprint on the rest of the game.

Kiara Branch started the run with a three-pointer, making the score 25-13 with 2:03 remaining.

Chelsea Robinson made a three on the Lady Bulldogs’ next trip down extending the lead, 28-13.

Chantel Roberts put in two free throws with 0:13 remaining in the half to give her team a 32-13 lead. Janel Cannon scored on a floater at the buzzer to stop 10 straight KF points but KF still held a 32-15 lead at the half.

“I thought we did a good job of getting back in the game, and then we just broke down defensively again,” said NR head coach R. Calvin Mason Sr.

The Lady Bulldogs forced NR into 22 total turnovers in just the first half.

“Many of them were unforced turnovers, but they were aggressive,” said Mason, “They played to what the officials allowed and took advantage.”

Delisia Sharpe, the Lady Warriors’ season leader in points and rebounds, sat out most of the first half, after suffering from a nose bleed early in the first quarter.

“When you lose your only low post threat, and only true rebounder, then it’ll change the game,” said Mason.

After Roberts started the half with four straight points to take KF lead to 21 points, Sharpe reentered the game at the 6:30 point in the third, and scored three points of her own to make the score 38-20 with 5:33 to go.

Renikqua Ricks halted any momentum the Lady Warriors were hoping to gain, with a three-point play, to put her team up 41-20.

The Lady Bulldogs finished the third quarter leading 53-26.

King’s Fork outscored the Lady Warriors by double digits in each period but the fourth period on the night.

“We’ve been trying to get our quarter points up,” said Fofana, “We feel like if we break it down quarter by quarter we’ll do better.”

Nansemond River attempted somewhat of a comeback, with three consecutive threes late in the fourth quarter, and came within 19, 63-44, with 1:45 remanding in the quarter.

But King’s Fork’s defense along with the Lady Warriors prevalence for turnovers, would ultimately lead to a 66-46 win for the Lady Bulldogs.

King’s Fork (6-9, 5-7) sweeps Nansemond River for the regular season and has won three straight games and five of its last seven since starting this season 1-7. KF traveled to take on the Southeastern District’s first-place team, Indian River, on Friday night. The Lady Warriors (7-10, 5-8) were at home versus Hickory.
