Everyone has a sad little space on their wall — whether it’s a small corner or a spot above the mantel – for which they’ve been waiting to find the perfect piece of art.

Nansemond Suffolk Academy’s 24th annual Art Show and Sale boasts hallways and hallways of possibilities to fill that space.

Although the show is in progress already, the opening ceremony — which was frozen out last weekend, due to Saturday’s snowstorm – will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Sunday, NSA will also host “Kid’s Day” from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for parents to bring children to the exhibits and experience some of Suffolk’s finest art.

“It’s the largest indoor art show of its kind here in Hampton Roads,” said Kenda Council, NSA’s director of development.

There will be a diverse selection of artwork on display in various mediums – paintings, glass, jewelry and more — with costs ranging from $25 to $7,000. The works of more than 170 artists will be on display during the sale.

Thirty-five percent of the proceeds from the paintings go towards the academy’s Fine Arts and Endowment Program. Artists keep the remaining 65 percent. More than $175,000 of artwork was sold at last year’s event.

“The show here at NSA has a good reputation among artists,” said John Warwick Jones, the 2010 featured artist. “Artists get excited about it. It’ll be one of my big shows for the year. I’m excited about it.”

As the featured artist, Jones will have approximately 30 paintings on display.

Jones has featured his work in more than 150 exhibitions and has won more than 125 awards. He has 38 years of teaching experience, 25 years in arts centers and museums, and manages the gallery at the Charles H. Taylor Arts Center in Hampton.

The hallways will remain open until Feb. 10 for people to view and purchase artwork.
