Neither a train, nor army, nor a second weekend of snow could stop Nansemond-Suffolk Academy’s efforts to host the grand opening of its 24th annual Art Show Saturday.

The show has been open since Wednesday, but last weekend’s snowstorm froze the original grand opening. Sunday, the school will host “Kid’s Day” from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., giving parents an opportunity to bring children to the exhibits, and artists will continue to replenish artwork that has been sold for people to purchase through Feb. 10.

“The level of talent has exceeded my expectations,” said Temple Basham, a first year visitor from Richmond. “It’s absolutely exceptional. This is definitely something I’d like to come back every year to see. And, the fact that it benefits the community and education makes it a win, win, win.”

The reputation, quality and consistency of the show is paying off this year as the show has more sponsors than ever before.

“It’s been our best year ever for sponsors,” NSA’s Kenda Council said. “We’ve had 123 sponsors this year that brought in a net value of $18,000.”

Being a sponsor allows individuals to attend sponsor’s night, which is hosted before the grand opening and allows them an opportunity to view and purchase art before it is available to the public.

While foot traffic Saturday was slower than ususal due to the weather, people still made their way out and the traffic during the week has been stronger than usual.

“As soon as we opened on Wednesday, we had a rush of people come in,” NSA’s special events coordinator Melissa Hlinovsky said. “It’s been going great so far – despite the weather.”

Camille Harrell took her third trip through the halls Saturday.

“We came out for the kids,” Harrell, who was an event sponsor, said. “It gave the kids something to do on a snowy day. They love art.”

Peyton Harrell, age 7, participated in the art scavenger hunt with her friend Samantha Brown, 6.

“It makes it fun,” Peyton said. “We’re looking for paintings and if we win, we get $10 to go to the spirit shop.”
