After taking a break for the holidays, the Greater Suffolk Council gets back to work tonight connecting business leaders from around the city.

The organization will bring back its popular Second Tuesdays event for local business owners and the branch managers of larger corporations tonight at Main Street Coffee from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“The agenda is that we have no agenda,” said Cathy McEntire, president of GSC. “It’s just coffee and conversation without getting in depth about business. No one is pushing their business or agenda. It’s a good way for us to get to know one another.”

The GSC was created three years ago by “several new and lifelong residents of Suffolk who operated businesses in the area and recognized a need to unite the rapidly growing Central Suffolk business community,” its Web site states.

Since the group’s inception, it have established a contact base of more than 1,000 people interested in the Central Suffolk area and it has regular contact with over 350 interested parties.

Its mission is to “advocate for Suffolk’s businesses, with an emphasis on the city’s central commercial core,” the Web site states. “Utilizing promotion, partnerships, recognition and information, the organization is dedicated to raising awareness of the commercial climate and fostering a healthy and stable environment to create synergy and sustainable long-term growth for one of Hampton Roads’ most unique and fastest growing cities.”

“As a business owner, I like to do business with people I know,” said McEntire, who is principal of McEntire Davis Architects. “Everything we do is based on relationships. … It’s the perfect opportunity for me to get to know the people behind the businesses I’m working with.”

With the rapid growth taking place in Suffolk and the number of large and small businesses new to the area, GSC is standing by ready, willing and able to help connect owners and managers with one another.

“Our mission at GSC is what we do at Second Tuesdays,” McEntire said. “We foster relationships between businesses. It is the number one thing that we do.”
