NR is 5th, Howell makes Cav history at districts

Lakeland senior Justin Howell won the 215-pound class Saturday in the Southeastern District Tournament at Grassfield. Howell is the first Cavalier wrestler to win a district championship in Lakeland’s time in Group AAA

Howell won all three matches on Friday and Saturday by pins. Howell has only one loss this season.

Nansemond River had the top team finish of the three Suffolk schools, finishing fifth. The Warriors started Saturday’s rounds eighth in the team standings. Antoine Hardy (103) and Terrance Hardy (160) finished second to lead the Warriors.

NR’s Matt Krogsund, Lakeland’s Alex Sari and King’s Fork’s Rasheen Rawlings and Matt Hommell finished third.

Oscar Smith won the district championship for the Tigers’ first SED title since 1979.
